Connelly scores again with his latest mystery introducing a series featuring sheriff's deputy Stillwell posted to Catalina Island after a career-retarding case. While it's a small, normally sleepy, island only busy on weekends, a body found snagged underwater in a garbage bag changed it. As per usual, Connelly balances police procedures with sharp insights into what makes people click.

This is not Bosch. It is not Mickey Haller. It is a fairly flat character, and the storyline was fairly boring.

Michael Connelly is one of my all-time favorite authors and an instant auto buy. I was excited about his new series and the first book did not disappoint. I reaply like the main character Stilwell and the Catalina setting is great. The story was very typical Connelly with multiple crimes weaving together, it was an engrossing read - particularly the middle section was very fast paced - and it kept me on my toes. It was almost a 5 star for me (which is rare), however the story slows down a little bit toward the end and I felt not all loose ends were quite fully tied up. Nevertheless a great start and I look forward to the next book which I'm sure I won't have to wait for too long!
