Wow... I just finished this book and I don't know what to feel right now... I have a serious book hangover.
When I first started this book, I was uncertain if it would live up to its predecessor's success. I need not have worried. The Girl in the Tower was just as amazing as The Bear and the Nightingale. I will be counting the days until the arrival of the final book in the Winternight Trilogy.

Also, Morozko owns my heart <3

the fact that i have to wait 11 weeks until i get a copy of the third book is a travesty

this book made me feel the biggest feelings. once again, i am in awe of how arden writes the omniscient pov, especially as we haven't seen or heard from sasha and olga since the first book. their roles in moscow and their characters were really refreshing and made the setting more immersive. and much like vasya, their minds are always at work, detecting and deducing, so i as the reader always felt like the story kept moving.

i took a really big break from the book around 75% (ish) in, mostly due to life stuff, but also the story itself -- i wasn't totally surprised by the reveal that happened, but i was hoping it wouldn't and it was a lot of secondhand embarrassment for me to handle. i got right into it again when i came back to it though, and everything wrapped up a bit quicker than i expected, but with so much foreshadowing that i just want to know what happens next.

also obsessed with vasya and the frost demon. ive never highlighted a book more.

Beautiful, breathtaking, a perfect combination of fairy tale and history. The characters were so well constructed. They all had depth and were vital to the story.

UKUPNA OCENA (overall rating) ★★★★✫ 4.5/5
Radnja (story) ★★★★✫ 4.5
Okruženje (setting) ★★★★ 4
Pripovedanje (writing style) ★★★★✫ 4.5

UTISAK (summary) - odličan nastavak prvog dela Medved i slavuj.

I didn't enjoy it as much as the first book, as I really enjoyed the more intense mysticism found in first novel with its setting in the countryside winter woods. Nevertheless, the world-building and plot were well-developed and built on top of an already rich and exciting world.

I am in love with this series, and I know I shouldn’t be invested in more series because I honestly cannot keep up. But, if you’ve read the first book of this series, you’ll understand why it is so worth your time to read it. That being said, I am having a hard time finishing this book.

The main character? Oh man, she is problematic af. I used to like her voice but comes the second book, her voice is just annoying and I found myself wanting to slap herself silly. Like, I get she understands nothing, and she felt like she’s merely a pawn, but come the f on, stop being a know it all. We all know what horrible things would happen when one acts like a know it all.

So, yeah, story wise, this book is still as gripping, if not more, than the first one. I really felt like I’m at the end of my seat the whole time. Character wise? Damn, I can totally go by without having to listen to the inner voice of our dear main character.

But, and here’s where the book redeem itself. Yes, the main character was annoying this time around, but I can also feel the change in her as a character, that there was a sense of evolution from the first book to the second (though technically the timeline has not been far apart). It’s interesting to see a character evolution that made sense.
