This is one of those books which is very difficult to read. Campbell offers mythology examples from all over the world to build his framework. It is a book you need to read slowly to digest it, and read you should - the framework for the hero is important!
This book blew my mind when I read it as a teenager. Reread it about 10 years. and not all of it has aged well, (got a lot of gender essentialism that made me roll my eyes) but it's still absolutely worth the time. Not only worth the time in itself, it's also fascinating seeing the impact its had on the way we tell stories, and to catch a glimpse of the story of the hero we keep telling. For better or for worse. So many movies and books are almost scene for scene patterned on it; everything from Star Wars to Ghost Busters to The Devil Wears Prada. Even the last movie I watched, Serenity (we see it every year at the Equality Now charity screening) draws from it, though with some nice twists.
Because of it, I know to watch for the moment where the hero puts on the skin of the enemy. The key bit, of course, is to take it off again.

This was a fascinating read that I've put off for far too long. I love the eclectic examination of myths from all sorts of cultures around the world. As many of Campbell's examples came from myths I know as came from myths (and cultures) I'd never heard of. He presents a fascinating study of myth and the social-psychological impact of myth on human culture. I love how it makes a broad argument for the nature and use of myth in both a historical and modern/personal context. I can see why this text is so well loved and known.
I appreciated how I got lost in the way he builds his narrative argument. Not that I didn't understand, but that he fluidly moves from example to example, culture to culture, that it's not jarring when the text transitions to another facet of the hero's journey to the next. It is certainly not a quick read, but I enjoyed that. There is a tremendous amount of material to examine here, and I'm confident I'll need to re-read it several times to appreciate it fully.

هذا الكتاب هو مقدمة مثالية للدخول إلى موضوع النماذج البدئية واللاوعي الجمعي. طبعاً هنالك مقدمات لهذا الموضوع يجب الإلمام بأساسياتها كمبادىء التحليل النفسي وغيرها العديد، لكن الأهم هو أن تمتلك الفضول الكافي والجرأة للقفز وإلقاء نظرة على المجهول، أو لنقول الصلف الكافي لقضم تفاحة المعرفة رغم كل التحذيرت.
علينا إإذن أن نفهم الآلهة والإلهات كتجسيدات وحراس إكسير الوجود الأبدي،وليس أكثر،كما لو أنها ذاتها المطلق في حالته البدئية. وما يبحث عنه البطل في تواصله معها ليست هي بذاتها وإنما رحمتها،وهذا يعني قوة الماهية التي يأتون منها،هذه الماهية الحافلة بالأسرار مع الطاقة هي بمفردها الخالدة. أسماء وأشكال الآلهة التي تتجسد في مشارق الأرض ومغاربها،تشع وتمثل،تأتي وتذهب. وبهذه الطريقة علينا أن نفهم الطاقة الغريبة لأسافين الرعد التي يرسلها زيوس، ويهوه وبوذا الأعلى، والذي يتدفق ونفهم خصوبة مطر الدموع التي تتدفق من عيون فيراكوشا،والقدرة التي تعلن عنها النواقيس التي تقرع في القداس أثناء رسالة القسيس، وضوء الاستنارة العليا الذي يستحوذ عليها الحكماء والقديسون. يمكن لحراس هذه الطاقة أن يجازفوا فقط لدى مثل هؤلاء المرشحين لأن يوزعوا منها لأولئك الذين أمتحنوا حتى الأعماق

That was a tough read but I enjoyed it. It goes into great details around the hero's journey and I loved the references from all over the world. The writing style demands mindful reading and I welcomed the challenge. Joseph Campbell was a gift to humanity.
