Unpopular(?) opinion: Alucard Emery is my favorite character so far.

Ahh yes Schwab’s writing is just so good!!! I rarely read fantasy, but I just get dragged right into the wonderful, engaging prose. It’s like she can actually think of synonyms and use them effectively, instead of just using the same verbs over and over again. It definitely adds to the magical feeling of these books and I love it a lot.

Honestly though, I didn’t love the game element. It just seems really overdone in fantasy literature these days. But I really liked the pirates and seeing all the people from different countries in the Red London world!

It was entertaining, but it has all the problems a middle book can have. The trap the villain was building didn't spring until the end of the book. The tournament didn't have a clear point: the author didn't elaborate on the fights to make me feel really excited about them, the participants she made you root for (Kell, Lila) didn't make it to the finals (it was a really disappointing moment, as it was narrated as "oh, she lost" rather than making it exciting), and I didn't understand what the plot, characters, or even the worldbuilding gained with all of it. In summary, it felt just as a filling book.
