A few weeks ago, I was lucky to see John Waters perform at UCLA and afterwards I immediately purchased two of his books. “Crackpot” is a collection of short essays; many portions were used in the show that I saw. I enjoyed the book and many parts made me laugh, but I think many of the best parts he used in his show. As I read through the collection, I found many parts to be tedious or redundant, almost like he was trying to fill a book with quantity over quality. I often find this to be the case with essayists, usually when they have written multiple books.
I still enjoyed the book, just not as much as I thought I would. I hate to admit this, but this book might be better as an audio book. Having just listened to Waters speak, I could hear his voice as I was reading “Crackpot” and I think his cadence is just as important as the words. He is a fantastic storyteller.
This is also good for a light read. I bought it on my Kindle for a trip to Canada and I found it easy to read in distracting environments, like airports!

Delightful. John Waters is a treasure to this planet. Always love discovering more fodder for potential inspiration.

I finally got around to reading this and of course I loved it. I just really appreciate John Waters' view on the world, even though I'm a bit more "square" than "drape." I especially loved the essays about 101 things he hates AND loves, because I completely relate to that feeling of hating yet also loving everything. Love ya, John W.
