I don't recall why I picked up this book. I had never heard of Scott Sigler. I'd never heard his podcast, and I certainly was no Sigler "junkie." The premise of the book was intriguing. The style of the narrative, the depth of the characters and the drive of the plot kept me interested. The main character, in particular, was someone I could connect with. I cared what happened to him and to the other characters in the story.

This book is a quick read, and was somewhat interesting, but man was it gross. At times I felt like the author was just making this stuff up so he could be as cringe-worthy as possible. Mission accomplished. Also, the ending was unsatisfying and a total cliffhanger, no doubt to get you to read the sequel. Which I will not be buying.

It cannot be overstated that this book is gross. Gross and violent. That being said, it was a fun read, even when I had to skim over parts in order to keep my lunch down.
There is a great wit and a weird sense of humor in this story. It might be awhile before I do, but I am interested in reading more from this author.

I read the book after listening to the original podcast by Scott Sigler. I enjoyed the podcast more, but the book was fine. I enjoy many of Mr. Sigler's stories and will read more of them.

I REALLY enjoyed the story/idea! So that’s why i gave it 3. But i felt as though the writing wasn’t great. I really couldn’t stand any of the characters either. The subtle xenophobia, homophobia, and misogyny were really difficult to get over. I get that the characters themselves were just a*wipes in general, but yikes!
I love a good gore/horror/thriller, and i feel like the plot was entertaining. I don’t know if I’ll bother reading the rest of the series though!

If you like gore for no real purpose, this is your book. Liking incoherent also helps.
dark mysterious tense medium-paced

Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

I really wish I could give 3.5 stars. It was so close to being great but just didn't reach that. I did like it quite a bit, though the ending was a little blah for me. Now I have to read the next book to see what happens.

Just too scary/graphic violence for my tastes. But for those that like such books, this is action packed.

meh. ok for summer reading. I enjoyed Sigler's podcast novel Earthcore, but I think it was because his reading of his own work was so wonderfully over-the-top. This one kinda plods a bit.
