CW: Ableist language, Romani slur, woman slur, r*pe mentions, animal cruelty and death

This book was confusing and weird--bad weird. Too weird for me. Was it supposed to be horror?  Seemed pretty horrific to me.  A lady on tiktok recommended it, I will not be taking her recommendations again!

This was a really odd book, and I don't mean that in a bad way.

I really loved some of the writing, especially the way some things are described or the vivid similes used. I read this really quickly and that was refreshing after my previous, long and emotional wrecking reads.

I reckon I have a fairly decent understanding of the story, but I do know that I could definitely delve deeper into it. However, I'm happy just having gone along for the ride and I don't really feel that compelled to dive into the contents of the book that much. I enjoyed the freaky, girly, strangeness to it and it did its job to fill me with such an odd feeling at times.

I didn't really understand the line at the end with the mud but that's ok.

I was somewhat interested in the book until the author casually dropped the r-word out of nowhere. It was  unnecessary to the story and character, and seemed like ignorance or worse from the author. I checked the content warnings on StoryGraph and discovered more slurs would follow so decided not to finish. This book was published in 2019. Come on, use your head. You’re not edgy or interesting by using offensive slurs. If it doesn’t have anything to do with the story or characters, just don’t.

First of all, I wasn’t sure what I was going into when I picked up this book. Not my cup of tea in terms of the genre, but I wanted to give it a fair shot so I read until the end. I found that the writing style was very immature. To me, it sounded like something I would’ve read in high school. But the content was disturbing.
I didnt feel like the end was satisfying, though it felt like it was supposed to be a closed ending with the scene where Max attacks the Bunnies. It didn’t feel like there was a smooth transition (or any transition for that matter) between Samantha coming out of the trance-like state and going back to Ava.
It felt rushed but drawn out at the same time. I think the length of the book was enough to do a better job of building up the characters and the plot. I wouldn’t recommend it personally, even putting aside my distaste for the plot, due to the writing style.

It's a weird one man! Some of the writing can come off as pretentious and took me out of it at moments. But it is a book about graduate level writing students, so a little pretension is expected. I enjoyed the plot and the complicated main character. I was confused for a bit about where the plot was going. It is quite fast-paced, but also really mysterious and it's written in a way that is more metaphorical than straightforward. I was surprised by some pieces at the end. I also really liked the ending. I can see you liking this is you are a fan of Ottessa Moshfegh or even if you liked Y/N by Esther Yi.

rating dropped from 3 stars to 2 on account of Awad’s propensity for racist and ableist slurs and derogatory depictions, perpetuating harmful stereotypes and condoning the use of bigoted language through her own wilful ignorance.

An absolutely wild ride. Knocked off a quarter star for some slurs I didn’t love.

Really disappointed after loving All's Well so much. Bunny had the same nightmarish disorientation quality that I loved and Mona Awad does so well, but I kept getting kicked out of the story by the casually dropped racial slurs and ableist langage (ex.,
ableist language - the r word, using schizophrenic as a derogatory joke; racial slurs - the g word several times
) that didn’t do anything for character or plot development. Especially in a novel that has racial elements and white privilege as a theme (the Bunnies embody entitled rich white lady-ness to a high degree), why choose to sling these around if not just to sound…edgy I guess? I have no idea why this was done and I’m afraid there’s no good reason at all.
