I read one of the more recent Alex McKnight books, and decided I should start at the beginning of the series, which is A Cold Day in Paradise. From my recollection, this book reads very similar to the later book in the series, which makes me wonder "Why bother?" with any of the rest of the series?

Barely started this book. Nothing to grab my interest about McKnight to invest my reading time in another detective series.

Alex McKnight is a former cop turned private detective. He retired from the force after he and his partner were shot by a man called Maximilian Rose. His partner died and Alex moved to Paradise, a small town by the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan.

Now, several years later, a series of killings are taking place and the killer appears to be none other than Maximilian Rose - although he is supposedly locked up in prison. What's more, Rose appears to be targeting McKnight as another victim.

This is a convoluted but highly enjoyable suspense novel that is very hard to put down. The suspense is almost unbearable at times. The book reads very much like a movie and just like a movie it hangs on at the end when you think that everything is wrapped up to give you one more twist in the tale. This is the first of seven novels featuring Alex McKnight and while it's not imperative to start with #1, you would probably enjoy them most if you read them in order. If you enjoy the likes of Harlan Coben and Christopher Reich, I strongly recommend A Cold Day in Paradise.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a real quick read and although the ending had a somewhat predictable twist at the end parts still really surprised me. I would definitely recommend this book and author. I look forward to reading the next book in the series now.

I really enjoyed this book for what it was. The reveal at the end had me thinking, "huh, I should've seen that coming", and the explanation just felt like an odd choice to me. Sylvia (one of only 2 women in the plot) served no purpose in my opinion, but perhaps she is returned to in other books in the series? I'm not sure exactly how the series runs but I have another book that I plan to start soon, so we'll see.

Overall, gripping book, I read most of it in one sitting. It didn't feel very high stakes for most of it but I was invested enough in the characters themselves to continue reading.

I'm surprised this book doesn't have a higher average rating. I loved it and had a hard time putting it down. Looking forward to reading more in this series!

Not a bad start to this series even if it did get a little improbable there at the end. The main character, Alex, makes for an okay guy...although for a former police officer he sure does have little regard for or patience with standard police procedure. I'll give the second book a look but if the love interest sticks around I'm out. I did like the snarky, sarcastic humor though.
