I really wanted to like this.

Age gap? Check.
Fake relationship/arranged? Check.
Enemies to lovers? Check.

I don't mind gritty books. Not only did this not work, but there were some awful stuff. Some scenes are grey areas, but all I saw was abuse. I'm not going to shame someones sexual kinks, but if someone says STOP, you stop.

The only reason this is two stars instead of one is because the writing was good.

Yo fuck this book

I know I hate captivity stories but I feel like I should have had more warning that this was essentially a kidnapping/BDSM/let me be your father situation. If I’d known that I absolutely would never had read.

Like actually what the fuck. This man has only punished her and treated her really poorly (he fully assaulted her..) only tells her is that she’s awful and somehow gaslight her into thinking she’s hurting Lucian by not seeing him as a saint. That it’s her fault she’s getting punished. Bullshit.
Not to mention I’m sick of these stories where a girl is supposed to be this badass super smart renegade that gets immediately bested by this stupid cold man. Dumb!

Fuck this guy I’m quitting at 50%. I’m only sorry I’m missing out on him (what I can only assume) dying lol because he’s a piece of shit.

I got tired but I don't want not to DNF it. It was ok but I'm not going to pick the next book either.

I flipping LOVE this book!!! The love story is amazing and raw and gritty. I wanted to crawl inside these characters and live them.

Let's talk about Confess: A Dark Romance. I have no problem with dark books, I tend to actually enjoy dark things. However, I had a lot of issues with this book. The premise of the book is that con artist Gypsy Blue has a secret that could cost her and her sister, Birdie, their freedom. When Lucian West, a hard edged attorney who takes criminal cases that seem impossible, blackmails her into being his wife. It's a weird situation, but these two are determined to outlast the other.

This was a strange premise, but I went with it. Gypsy was interesting and I liked her enough in the beginning. But oh my god did I hate Lucian. He drove me up the walls. His incessant attitude that he knew what was right for Gypsy made me want to strangle him. I had several notes where I wanted him to burn in hell yadda yadda.

While Lucian is constantly a low level asshole the whole book, there was something about these two that gave me a begrudging respect for their relationship. Eventually, I even WANTED them to be together. Seriously, send help for my soul because I ended up liking Lucian at the end. The man had so really messed up motives and reasoning to how he did certain things, but I guess he wasn't like evil.

Even when I was raving to my friends about how much I was angry with this book, I couldn't give up on it. As a general rule, I rarely DNF books. Maybe it's dumb but I like to know whether the book gets better or if it is a complete trash fire. If the second option then I can write a wonderful rant review :) I digress, back to the book. The writing and characters (even I was mad at Lucian) kept drawing me back into the story. I needed to know what was going to happen.

Shit literally hit the fan around 75-80% and I was sitting there like a gaping fish. This book had one of the most intense plot twists I've read because I had literally not expected it at all. I think I may still be in a bit of shock from it. But wow, like after that there was a ton of action and when the ending came I was not ready. I'm definitely invested in these characters now and if the second book is about who I think it is, then I will be reading that as soon as I can.

This book was a not as good version of Sparrow (which I LOVE)- the character development and the progression of Gypsy (what kinda dumbass name is that??) and Lucian's relationship was non existent, the pacing was a bit all over the place, and there were loads of things that happened that I was really confused about the purpose of their inclusion because it was so rushed (the shelter? The murder of that pimp? Gypsy wanting to explore her roots?) And don't even get me STARTED on the shitshow towards the end- had no CLUE what the hell was going on and it came out of NOWHERE.

Right so the first 50% of this book I was dying bc I loved it sm. I love the plot, characters and just everything about the book. But once we got to the second half of the book, I felt like I was reading a completely different book. The story took a turn towards the dramatics. It was a complete 180. Every event that played out was just so bizarre (relative to its first half) and took me out of the book bc it didn’t feel organic to the plot. Tbh, I would much rather the author have scrapped all the ott, theatrical events, for just more character development and more relationship growth, bc I was loving reading about the way the MCs relationship was progressing and how they’re reservations were diminishing and how they were falling for one another.

There was just soooo sooo much potential with this one and it’s sad to see it go to such waste just for shock value plot points and laziness in character growth on behalf of the author.

*deep breath**exhale*
A decent book overall. The second half was a bit of a struggle at times so I did skip here and there.
