So this book deserves a 5 simply because JoJo Moyes is an incredible wordsmith & storyteller! At the beginning of the story, I was enchanted by brave, compassionate Sophie, a new favorite heroine. In the middle of the story, I was frustrated by stubborn Liv & was ready to delete this review from my Goodreads feed. A bit further on & I was ready to write an irate email to the author about what she was doing to these fictional peeps. But then that ending . . . Yes, the ending & the epilogue satisfied my heart & freed me to love the story again :)
(***Lest you believe I unthinkingly rate every story a 4 or 5, I'll remind you of my GR "policy." This year I decided if a book is a DNF or a 3 or below, I typically will not rate it here. It's too discouraging to the authors. And as for all the 4's & 5's? I simply love stories & appreciate the ones who tell them---whatever genre & whatever style. Thanks to all you hardworking authors out there! You're appreciated.)

Such a good book! I'm going to have a book hangover tomorrow!
Great story. Loved the story set in France during WWI and enjoyed how the story unraveled and progressed throughout the book.
I was a bit sceptical once it switched over to Liv, and there was definitely aspects that I wasn't too keen on, but I ended up really enjoying this. So many reveals of information happened, but it all seemed to fit logically in the end. All in all, very emotional and enjoyable.

Rich, engaging and beautifully written. Surprisingly, I preferred the historical story to the modern one, but thought both worked well together.
“All that really matters is who you love.”
Have you ever psyched yourself out of reading a book before? This book has been sitting on my bookshelf for about 4 years and I kept looking at it and saying, “but it will never be as good as Me Before You or The Last Letter From Your Lover,” so I’ve avoided reading it... now, I’m so glad my best friend convinced me to buddy read it, because it was SO good.
Near the beginning I felt like the story was a little slow, not bad, just hadn’t hooked me. But all of a sudden I was immersed in these amazing characters and their personalities and I didn’t want to stop reading. This book not only solidified that Moyes is an incredibly talented author (historical fiction is definitely her jam!) but that she writes well developed supporting characters that each have their own quirks and personalities. This book is full of them and I loved each and every one!
Needless to say, I was not prepared to give this one 5 Stars, but the ending just warmed my heart, so, BAM! If this book has been left to collect dust bunnies on your unread shelf then I encourage you to pick it up soon!

Loved, loved, loved! Couldn't put it down. Devoured it in two days.
This one brought out so many emotions..at the end.
But first! we follow Sophie in her occupied village. The Germans are there, and I was all, is this a sad book? Will everyone die? Because it was war, and well then I think that. Also the feeling when the Kommandant started eyeing her portrait and her. Bad feeling, bad feeling about this book. But then the things I learned and hey no side is good during a war. Whatever the history books tell you (even if some are SO much worse, but let's not think of that now.)
And the end of Sophie's story! Omg it killed me because...the book was not over.
Nope, then it was Liv's story, and she has a portrait and I was all but what about SOPHIE!? Still it was Liv's story that hit me the hardest. The cruelty! Assholes! Yes yes, I saw that side but if you read the book come on! Some do not even care.
But what about Sophie? We learn more about her when Liv investigates how the painting ended up where they bought it. So I have to wait the entire book to learn more about the actual story that pulled me in. Which was so cruel.
Moyes it good, but maybe too intense for me. I got so aaaaaaaaangry.
