I usually don’t like books that end where it’s revealed the character “wrote” the book you’re reading. But the book idea coming from your ghost mother is just a whole other level of wrong and unnecessary. I really struggled to finish this.

what does it mean, as a woman, to love a man? beautifully poignant in it’s storytelling of womanhood; of falling in love in a man’s world. i came to love paz and romy, and even billy in the early entries of romy’s journal. like romy’s life-ending sentiment, every page felt like i was on the edge of discovering something new.
i liked how in-your-face the commentary on gender was throughout the novel — it’s something that i haven’t seen executed so masterfully. but like others, i particularly disliked the 40 year time skip, switch to second person pov, and conversation with ghost romy that just feels utterly out of place in the rest of the novel.
still stunning, regardless. a new favorite!
