Martin Luther was first and foremost a biblical scholar. He is renowned as a translator and as a commentator. This book is the sixth volume of "The Annotated Luther" published by Fortress Press. This volume focuses on Scripture. The series is designed to present the essential Luther, and in this case the focus is on his work with scripture. The volume includes both full texts and excerpts from Luther's works, beginning with an open letter written in 1530 on the task of translating scripture. It includes Luther's prefaces to both the Old and New Testaments. There are lectures, prefaces, and sermons. While the basis is the American Edition of Luther's Works, efforts have been made to update language (inclusive) and where necessary take advantage of more recent scholarship. Each piece has its own introduction, written by a leading Luther scholar, along with annotation.
It is beautifully printed and illustrated. This volume may have special use even beyond Lutherans, as it reveals some of Luther's insights into Scripture, with pieces dating to before he began his reforming work to the end of his life.
