I loved this book. It almost felt like a collection of short stories instead of a novel. I loved how Louise worked in the Native American folklore. I can't wait to read her other books.

I read some of the later books in the series first & I miss having Nanapush to narrate with humor. This one seemed so full of sadness that I laid it down halfway through and didn't feel like continuing. Plus I kept having to refer to the family tree -- and was still confused! But despite the complexity and sadness, there's also poetry and beauty that made it a worthwhile read.
