I have loved and read this book to death. I got it originally from my mother's book collection, and I've read it almost a dozen times, and it's still so good!

A masterpiece. Both heroine and hero have their past and they both are doing what they can to deal with it. Lily is a devorcee who can't find her place in the little community she lives in. Daniel is a lawyer who started from the very bottom of the social ladder and now wants to run for the senator position. They know each other and once again they are standing on the opposite sides of the conflict - that is, before the murder. The sparks are flying even though it isn't before the last parts of the book that there is some really carnal action. The plot is intelligent and engaging. I really enjoyed this book.

I love Laura Lee Guhrke. She writes such wonderful female characters. Self-possessed, flawed, but well-rounded and so damned likable. Her males are also pretty atypical for most of the romance world. They're actually, god forbid, pretty damned considerate. There's never any "wow this is skirting way too close to the edge of rape" for my tastes in her books. (Or not the ones I've read thus far anyway.)

Not to mention that this book does something that a lot of romance novels don't do very well: it has a plotline independent of when the clothes are going to start coming off. A slower build into a murder mystery that I honestly only figured out about the same time our heroine sussed it out.

Just wonderful. I sort of want to abandon all else and read Laura Lee Guhrke's entire back catalogue.

4/5
Would be 4.5 but the ebook had a lot of editing mistakes possibly from scanning ("lie" appearing as "he" was a very common one and "CINE" for "clue"). Great story otherwise.

I tend to be a bit of a subgenre snob in my romance reading. I like my heroines Western European, my heros the same, and I like a Western European setting. Breathless was a break from that and I am so glad that Super Librarian Wendy put me on the path of this book.

The best part of the novel was the setting and time period: 1905 Georgia. Awesome! Enough tension created by external factors like class and race, but modern enough to have a heroine with a real job (librarian - YAY!) and who's a divorcee (SHOCK!).

The chemistry between the h/h was smoking hot, though the "virgin-like divorcee" stuff was a little hard to stomach. Lily, the heroine, is such an interesting and dynamic character and that facet, that she's really a prude in the bedroom, just didn't seem to fit.

The other issue I had with Breathless was that Daniel's BIG MOMENT OF CHANGE came way to easy. Without spoiling what happens (though any romance reader worth their book buying budget can figure it out from page one) his BIG REALIZATION seemed to come too quickly, too near the end of the book, and way too easily.

Laura Lee Guhrke is on my radar though, because there was a lot that worked really well for me in Breathless. Any other good LLG suggestions?

Set in 1905 in a small town in Georgia, Breathless is an enemies to lovers romance between a scandalous divorcée librarian and a slick big city lawyer. Daniel Walker is back in his hometown on behalf of a client who wants his social club AKA brothel to be reopened. On the other hand, Lily Morgan has been actively fighting to close that brothel for the past couple of years. The judge finally agreed with her this time and closed it down. Lily and Daniel were already at odds with each other because Daniel had represented her ex-husband during the scandalous divorce proceedings that labeled her an adulteress. This new situation puts Lily and Daniel on opposite sides once again, and thus begins the battle of the sexes. But all bets are off when the small town is hit with a brutal murder, which forces Lily and Daniel to work together.

This book checked all the right boxes for me. The small town setting is so atmospheric and the author does a good job illustrating how a divorced woman is treated during that time period. Daniel and Lily have quite the history together even though they don't know each other all that well. Lily only knows him as the bastard lawyer who helped ruin her reputation based on false accusations. And Daniel only knows her as the cheating ex-wife of his best friend. Both Lily and Daniel made assumptions about each other, but being in close proximity reveals the truth of their character. Not only do we have a slow burn enemies to lovers romance, but we also have some courtroom drama and a murder mystery to solve! I loved every single thing about this book

This book is more along a 4,5 stars.
Laura lee Guhrke is without question, one of my favorite historical romance writers. I love her characters and her stories. Most of her books are on my favorite shelve. So, to say that i really loved this book is, almost a given fact. But, this one has something that i've never found in another one of her stories. The descriptions of the ambience in which the majority of this story takes place, in the beginning of the twentieth century were...completely outstanding. Amazing, how, by turning the pages, i would feel like i was right in the middle of Shivaree, Georgia. With all, her, small town quirks and peculiarities.
I really liked how the main characters were portrayed, and the fact that the romance was a slow burner. Although enfatuated by one another, neither characters displayed irrational behaviour, or loss of mental abilities, which i just found refreshing.
Also i really liked the mistery, and the court drama in this book. For a lawyer, Daniel, sure turned out a very interesting person. Although not my first romantic suspense by this author, i have to say, that this one, had everything i could ask for and more. Great characters, and a very good story.
Now, why can't a book like this, be translated in Portugal?
