A preachy and boring treatise on marriage masquerading as a novel.

I found this book really difficult to get through. The concept of a hypothetical couple starting from the dating and going well through marriage was a cool concept at first, but then as De Bottom continued to give his opinion and insert advice - I found it incredibly unreaslitic.

Everyone’s relationships are layered, complex and different. The advice/knowledge given in this book is so focused on just one facet of relationships (a heterosexual couple who dates, gets married, has kids.)

I also found the main character (Rabih) pretty horrible. SPOILER ahead. I cannot get behind him cheating on his wife, and then choosing not to tell her because he found out the reason he did it, and then patted himself on the back in the end for choosing love and choosing her and choosing to power through marriage. There was no honesty, no growth and I just found it really gross.

Definitely not the worst book I’ve read, but definitely do not recommend reading this book.

Not a huge fan of this one. The style of it is that there’s a passage about this couple, followed by a passage in italics that describes what’s happening in their relationship, like as if a therapist observer is commenting. I felt like I was being lectured.

I loved the ideas, but it didn’t work for me as a novel. The New York Times piece was far more effective.

Alain De Botton knows how to write a good love story. This could be a film. A really good film :)
