Okay, this was just so damn sweet and cute, I was not expecting it!

I did not have success with Morishita's last manga, Shortcake Cake, but their artwork is so expressive and beautiful I couldn't resist giving this a try. I'm definitely glad that I did, the artwork was stunning, the characters are sweet and endearing (except Oushi, fuck that asshole), and the paneling is PHENOMENAL. I shit you not, a huge reason why I enjoyed this volume so much was the clever use of long, vertical panels to convey time and emotion. That is one small example, but trust me the paneling as a whole is incredible and really works to convey emotion.

The characters work for the setting and tone, but what I appreciated the most was Yuki's friendship with Rin. Rin strikes a great balance between wanting Yuki to break out of her shell and pursue a relationship with Itsuomi, but understanding and respecting her limits. She's also very accommodating and never talks down or ditches Yuki, which is a huge plus. As for Itsuomi himself, while he isn't my ideal shoujo romance main lead, he does seem like a good person deep down. He may be blunt and a bit insensitive, but he's also kind and eager to learn. I'm looking forward to learning more about him.

This was a great first volume that made my heart swell and melt more than once. I can only hope it maintains this quality throughout it's run, but we'll see. I highly recommend this volume to any shoujo romance fan, it's definitely worth your time.

❀❀❀❀ 4 out of 5 flowers!

“𝑇𝑜𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑟𝑜𝑤, 𝐼 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑛 𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑒.”

A Sign of Affection follows the lives and blossoming romance of a college student named Yuki, who has been deaf since she was born, and a fellow student named Itsuomi, whom she first met on the train. Yuki is being asked for directions by a foreigner and is unable to understand him or to respond. Itsuomi, who has traveled the world and speaks multiple languages, helps Yuki out. However, sign language is not a language Itsuomi seems to understand yet. Despite the language barrier, Yuki feels herself drawn to his kindness and his personality, and the more often she spends time with him, the more her confusing feelings for him begin to grow.

Ah, this manga is so incredibly cute. I fell in love with the story, the characters, the art style, the character interactions. The opening of the story was so sweet and gentle, and from that moment throughout the whole volume, the pages let me feel warm and fuzzy. First of all, I found the characters to be very likable. We meet Yuki, who is kind, caring, patient, and sweet. I found her innocence to be very wholesome. Then we have Itsuomi, he is independent, but that doesn't stop him from being supportive, caring, understanding, and loving toward Yuki, which I admire in him. He asks her questions to understand her better out of true interest, he learns sign language to be able to better communicate with her, and he makes sure to not cross her boundaries. That's part of why I liked this manga so much, because of that the romance felt so healthy and safe. I found it wholesome and fun to see Yuki try to find out what she was feeling, leading to so many clumsy and awkward moments because Yuki was so confused most of the time. I also found the interactions between Yuki and her best friend Rin to be adorable. Yuki and Rin are very supportive of each other and I liked how they wanted the best for each other and were continually rooting for one another.

The story itself I found lovely, beautiful, and unique. The story and romance unfold gently, just like the transitioning of summer leaves turning into autumn ones. The story tells and shows a lot about how important communication is, and I found that to be beautifully told by the use of sign language, but most of all, how willing characters around Yuki were to have learned it, and speaking of Itsuomi, wanted to learn it. I felt like I as a reader got a good glimpse of how Yuki's experience was as a person with a hearing disability (yay for the representation!). For example, words were shown more clearly if it was easy for Yuki to understand what someone was saying, and words were fading or weird symbols appeared when she had difficulty understanding. I liked that. The art style I found to be very pretty, whimsical, and gave me all the cute romantic feels, and I found myself giggling multiple times because of the chibi versions of Yuki. And the headpats were so cute!

So, overall I found this to be a tender, lovely story that gave me all the happy, warm fuzzy feelings. I think you'll like this if you'd like a cute and wholesome story that also includes clumsiness and awkwardness. A story with beautiful illustrations, likable characters, heart-warming interactions, and a blossoming romance.
