A beautiful emotional read this book tackles many issues and they are all dealt with sensitively. I really liked the mystery that runs throughout the story. The characters felt very real and flawed. I was lucky that I read fionnuala Kearney debut novel but I honestly think this one is lots better as it has a perfect plot line that had me hooked right up until the end.

I was hoping that this would be a deeply twisting and dark page turner that lived up to the "wickedly intriguing" comment on the back page. Unfortunately I did not feel as though this novel met my expectations once.

It was hard hitting because of the content and the suffocating grief that was encapsulated but it all just felt repetitive and dull. The 'twists' came so late in the novel that I had already lost interest, and I pegged the secret lover in the first part. I do not know how anybody could have seen the lover as a surprise. It was like a constant neon sign throughout and I just lost interest immediately.

I didn't really understand why Theo was given so many POV chapters. He was so boring. He had no passion or enthusiasm. He was there to hide secrets and to add some drama to the Anna/Jess relationship. But chapters about his own life just felt a little pointless and slowed and already slow plot down.

I don't think that I would pick up another novel by this author.

I'm not sure if I just wasn't in the mood for a book of this genre or if I've just lost my reading mojo a bit but this book did not produce an emotional reaction I expected following the reviews I read. I don't have a daughter, granddaughter, sister, an ex husband or a male best friend, so it may have been that but unfortunately this book just didn't do it for me.
That being said, it is still a good book full of secrets, family loyalties, distrust and twists along the way so although I didn't react emotionally to it, it was still a decent read and of course this is only my opinion. I could of read this last year, or later this year and felt totally different. I liked the authors style of writing it was professional and well written and with a decent storyline (maybe a little too long) but this book will appeal to many. Would still recommend and I award 3 stars.

I was hopeful that The Day I Lost You would be just as good at You, Me & Other People but it surpassed all expectations. It was such a fantastically plotted book that faced tough issues head on. It dealt with grief, love, family, lies, heartache and happiness. It was a beautiful book from start to finish and there was a lingering mystery throughout that compelled me to keep reading. I cannot recommend this book enough. Fionnuala has definitely become an author that I will be auto-buying from now on. I adore her writing.

First I wanted to give up the reading. I didn’t know what to expect from this author and from this book and at the beginning it was to slow for me. Also the grieving mother story (Jess) is not easy to read about. But then I couldn’t give up and kept reading. All became more and more complicated. It came out Jess didn’t know her daughter Ann life at all. The secret after secret is revealed. In the end no one’s life as simple as it seemed before the death of Anna. Beautifully written story with great characters even those in the background. But I think there is no background character as everyone plays important role. Wonderful book, which tells us nothing, is simple in life only the choices we made counts.
