The premise was interesting and some parts were done well. However, I couldn't fully get into the book. It felt like McBride was trying to accomplish too much with this all the side plots, so quality was sacrificed at times. I also really wish there had been a warning about the pedophilia in the last part of the book.

The book was too slow and convoluted to maintain my interest. It had way too many side characters and storylines that didn't seem to go anywhere. Most seemed irrelevant to the main, but barely there, plot. I constantly found myself skimming parts because the story kept meandering. While I heard the story picks up toward the end, I'd already pushed myself enough that I no longer want to continue.

This one is a slow burn, but it’s an exquisitely crafted novel that comes together in a deeply moving, satisfying conclusion. James McBride has a gift for capturing America’s complex beauty— largely by depicting its profound ugliness with unabashed frankness. This is a novel that will stay with me forever.

This was an excellent book. I just didn't enjoy it. It felt slow and meandering at first. It eventually picked up the pace, and the various storylines came together for a thrilling ending. However, I spent most of the book wishing I had finished it. Once again, I must remember that just because a book is on a best-seller list doesn't mean I'll like it. I can appreciate this novel and even enjoyed parts of it, but I would have preferred this story as a mini-series to watch instead of reading.

Both heartbreaking (lots of triggering content) and heartwarming. It's very much a story about people and expertly written. That said it was a difficult read.
