THERE THEY ARE, my favorite children!!!! I MISSED THEM!!!! This book pulled me out from my reading slump, finally
medium-paced

I remember really loving the first book in the duology, though unfortunately it had been so long I did not remember much about the plot or characters. With that being said, there was enough to catch up here on what happened, but my impression of the characters was way different than it had been in the first book. I remember Alessa and Dante being a solid pair in the first novel, but in this book I didn’t think they were well-suited for one another. They didn’t seem to have anything holding them together aside from lust and a traumatic shared experience. They had *some* mutual admiration, and did *sometimes* see the best in each other, but 95% of the time they were either hurt by something the other said or did, hiding things from each other, or bickering for most of the book. Which, I guess is teen love? I just don’t buy the happily ever after with two people who made each other miserable for 300+ pages.

this book quite literally ends by saying “happily ever after”

this concept was so interesting but much like the first one it ended fairly without drama

spoilers -
both are main character (fmc and mmc) live even after they “die” which seems so easily done which is kinda saddening especially done twice now:(

this author is talented and i def would recommend it for a age group of 13-16 but probs not any older than tht!!

4.5/5

I was a little nervous to read this one because I have a few other series that disappointed me this year. They were good, but they didn't quite deliver for me. But...BUT Emily Thiede wrote a conclusion to her The Last Finestra duology that is packed with themes of sacrifice, belonging, and a whole lot of heart.

I'd forgotten how much I missed Alessa, Dante, and the rest of the gang. The continuation of their story was powerful and bittersweet. Theide did a nice job of balancing the heavier subjects with cute interjections of Alessa and Dante's flirting as well as humor from some of my favorite side characters (Kamaria and Kaleb).

The plot moved along pretty quickly. It dipped a couple of times, but Theide always made sure to pepper in moments of action to keep the story lively. The conclusion of the story did a nice job of wrapping up some unanswered questions.

I can't wait to see what Emily Theide does next, but I am a fan. Definitely add this duology to your list if you haven't already.

The big, propulsive emotions and romance of the first book were lacking here. The success of book was was the heart of it: Alessa and her angst, and the romance between her and Dante. In this, the sequel, I felt like that was missing. I didn't feel for the characters.

The romance, since the couple already got together in book 1, turned into petty drama between them. Even in the resolution, it was never satisfying.

There was a big feeling here of "teens hanging out and sometimes bantering." From beginning to end, the book was pushing side characters at me without also pushing why I should care about them.
There was also a lot of deepening of the magic system. Which, could have been interesting, but just came off as convenient deus ex machina and infodumping in the end.

Thanks to Netgalley and Wednesday Books for a copy of this novel to review. All opinions are my own.
