I have never finished a book feeling so conflicted in my life. I liked it but I also didn’t?? I’m satisfied with the outcome but not a fan of how we got here. Also not completely sure how we got here…

There was so much chaos in this book it was confusing. Everyone is suddenly gay and there’s so much sexual tension but barely any action and even random hints at a pregnancy trope that never comes to fruition? It felt excessive.

While I appreciated the plot twist I would’ve liked more foreshadowing or just more of an explanation because it kinda fell flat. Once again, I do not understand how we got here, am I just supposed to be happy we made it? We met our “villain” for 2.5 seconds, like what am I supposed to do with that?

Ultimately, my love for Dante and his happy ending is what made this book a good read for me. Plus extra points for making me cry.

I loved this book! The writing was beautiful, the characters felt so real and three-dimensional, and once again, I shipped Alessa and Dante a whole lot.

It was a good sequel and I enjoyed it but have to be honest I started losing interest at the end. Just didn't have the same passion the first book did and Alessia came across a bit more daft, as if she hadn't grown much of a backbone from her experiences.

Just felt it was missing that little extra to make it a great book. I almost wanted the book to end tragically which I don't usually root for, but just to give it that little extra impact it was missing

A good conclusion to the Last Finestra duology; adventure, battles, lots of new characters. They all experienced so much trauma in the first book, and there was clear carryover to the second.

However, the chemistry between Alessa and Dante that I loved in the first book wasn’t there as much. It was there, but they were stuck in a miscommunication loop. The “I’m not good enough, why are you with me?” got to be a bit repetitive.

All plot lines were wrapped up nicely.

This had classic second book energy. The plot was so well built up in the first book for the events of the first book that the beginning felt a bit lost because there was nothing that we were working towards.
Maybe it was just me, I was so confused what we were working towards for most of this book, I don’t know if that’s because they didn’t really know what they were expecting with the final test or if I was just having a hard time comprehending the explanations haha. Dante became sooo annoying, why did he keep throwing himself into life threatening situations, just stop it dude. Glad they all got their happy endings though.

This Cursed Light is the second book in The Last Finestra duology by Emily Thiede. After saving their island from destruction, Dante and Alessa have to confront an even greater threat as the gods demand a final test. Haunted by his lost powers and the risk that Alessa’s touch could kill him, Dante sets out with Alessa and their friends to find the exiled ghiotte, hoping to regain his abilities and form an army to defend humanity. However, Alessa’s growing darkness and the dangerous secrets of the city of the banished complicate their quest. Faced with impossible choices, Dante and Alessa must decide whether to sacrifice their love to save the world or let it burn.

As with the first book, This Vicious Grace, I really enjoyed all the innuendo and the banter between all the characters (not just between the two main characters). Despite the high stakes that they face, they did feel like 18 year olds having fun and being themselves. There's a casual tone to this duology that I really like. The returning side characters from book one, plus new side characters, are another highlight and there's definitely a found family vibe with the group. It felt like this book gave proper focus to the impact of book one's ending on both main characters, but without it being overplayed just for drama's sake. I liked the awkwardness that Alessa and Dante initially had with each other in this book - it made them feel genuine.

I loved book one, which culminated with the big battle that they'd all been training for. In comparison, book two's culmination wasn't quite as grand. It was maybe just a big act to follow. The final battle here was a bit of an anticlimax but there was some emotional chapters that followed it that did hit. Given the high stakes from book one, the stakes in book two just felt a bit lower.

It was another fun, easy read that I finished in one day, just like This Vicious Grace. The duology is really original, with its fantasy-Italy setting and the Finestra/Fonti magic system. The romance between the main characters felt like the focus in this book and it was a strong duology. I'd recommend this as a YA romantasy duology that tells a complete story and has Grishaverse vibes.
