The beats are there, and Moreno's imagery is great, but the writing style lacks artistry. It's as if the story didn't take full advantage of being a novel. I rarely say this, but I think this would have thrived more as a movie rather than a book since the horror beats are quite strong. I did like Thiago quite a lot as I found his flaws to push the narrative forward, but I felt there was a vital missing thread that made the ending fall flat for me.

this book was relentlessly sad, perfectly spooky, and somehow also a little funny. I loved it, but I cannot emphasize the relentlessly sad part enough.

You were you and I was me and there was this thing between us.

This book was incredible. I dragged out reading it because I didn't want it to end. The story flowed easily but I could easily see it going in other directions, familiar directions. But grief doesn’t do that. Grief isn't the expected or familiar. It doesn’t take you by the hand and lead you down a story you've read before. It's not a ghost story. At least not the one you expect. I felt all of it. I loved it. It was almost visceral.

Poor Brimley.
Also the line about ripping wallpaper off your skull? Ugh. Incredible
