Like the first book, I have been enjoying this story a lot and am excited for book three.

This book was a hot mess.

The first one was predictable, but still enjoyable. This one was so boring! I can sum it up very simply:
Poppy asks a question that leads to worldbuilding.

This book was basically all worldbuilding. They were traveling and NOTHING interesting happened until the last 10%. Poppy asks a snotty question only to have it be explained 5 million times and she still doesn't get it. This was overwhelming worldbuilding to which THE ACTUAL FUCKING STORY AND PLOT had to sit on the backburner while JLA figured out this world.

Let's talk about Poppy for a minute. She is rivals America Singer for being the most indecisive character to a point where it is beyond irritating. Her inner dialogue was the same each chapter and went in circles OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Even I'm not that indecisive. "I love Hawke but he's not Hawke but I love Casteel even though shit happened." Get with the program girl!

She's so childish too, which can be a good thing since she was sheltered her whole life. I was hoping for inner growth and maturity. Nope.

I think JLA is trying to figure this out with the reader and it's beyond irritating. As an author, you should know the ins and outs of the world if you're writing fantasy, especially if you're a fantasy veteran. It's like she's throwing shit together and calling it art. I can barely understand what's happening in this world because there's no plot to ground it or bring it to the forefront. It's like in math when someone doesn't want to learn because the concept doesn't apply to real life.

Even though I hated this sufferer of Second-Book-Syndrome, she convinced me to read the next one. Maybe for a roast. So many extremely hyped authors are writing too long books with a plot at the end, that forces their readers to continue on. What's with that?

Also, you can't tell me this isn't a fantasy version of Twilight.

I expected so much more but was met with mediocrity.

While a bit long winded, I really enjoyed this second book in the series, even more than the first. The characters continue to grow and the complicated relationships and world building is compelling. I love seeing how all the various communities have formed and the ways they are different and alike. And the intrigue, Im all about the intrigue!

I genuinely enjoy this book, but I know how this series goes. It definitely soured my perception re-reading, but I hope it picks up with the release of the newest book.
