A lot of people have compared this to Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code, and I can see some of the comparisons: Guy and girl racing around Europe solving an ancient puzzle while pursued by religious fanatics. But that's about the only similarity, really.

For one thing, I think Berry may have actually done historic research on his topics (ooh, burn), and I enjoyed reading this, whereas I can't say the same for any of Brown's work (more burn!).

Berry has an interesting take here on how the Templars might have survived until the present, and what their big secret might have been. The puzzle solving is fun, without too much contrived coincidence, and Malone is a good hero for the book. I think I'll pick up the next book in the series to see how his character evolves.

Cotton Malone is a new favorite character of mine. This book was well written and even though I thought I had it figured out, it surprised me a few times.

Then I read the author's note about the real foundations of parts of the book and I was even more impressed. This series is going to be awesome.

My biggest thought in reading through this book was, "I wish Dan Brown had written this". The Templar Legacy is a book in the vein of religious conspiracies similar to the ones Brown wrote in his wildly popular series, but without its fast pace and irresistible pull. At least for me.
