predictable ending, really no twists. no likeable characters. weird and gross things just to be weird and gross. misogyny and use of a transphobic term for obviously no reason. i have no desire to read a book of hers again

I recently purchased this book from The Hidden Chapter. I decided to buy it because I know it is Bridgetish’s favorite book and I have been curious to read a Gillian Flynn book. I really was in the mood for a quick, consuming thriller and this fit the bill.

I was able to guess who the killer(s) were pretty early on. I went back and forth between both of them so I was very satisfied in the last few pages when the twist was revealed. Even with the hunch, I was still so intrigued to see it all come together.

Camille was a fantastic complex narrator. I simultaneously loved her and hated her. She had so many problematic beliefs and engaged in problematic behaviors (sexism and also not her sleeping with an 18 year old and taking drugs with 13 year olds???). But I think the exploration of her background and understanding what shaped her softened her out a bit.

This is definitely a book that is tied up on a bow, which I appreciate in a thriller. Even though it was really dark and sometimes off-putting, it still left me satisfied.

I would definitely like to read more of Flynn’s work and can’t wait to watch the HBO miniseries.

Absolutely LOVED this. So glad I never finished watching the series since it made most of the book a surprise for me. The writing was stunning and descriptive. The small town  setting was so immersive and suffocating, the characters were all so vile yet believable, and the emotions were visceral. It was a crazy ride and I know I’ll be thinking about this one for a while!

DNF - How did this get such good ratings and so few comments on the unnecessary (never resolved) creepy misogyny.

My out point was the line "sometimes women get drunk and make bad choices, they're not raped" (not directly quoted, too lazy and angry to look it up).
