Sometimes I think the internet is more real than the real world.
Most adults see teenagers as confused kids who don't understand much, while they're the pillars of knowledge and experience and know exactly what is right at all times. I think the truth is that everyone in the entire world is confused and nobody understands much of anything at all.
"Do you ever feel trapped?" I ask Rowan.
He frowns. "Trapped how?"
"Like you can't anything without people watching."
"Why does it matter whether people watch?"
I shrug. "Must be nice to just...be a person."
Rowan stares at me. The flashing lights reflect in his glasses. "But we're gods, Jimmy. What's better than that?"

3.75? I know thats a super picky rating. But its a cutsiee. The ending didn’t quite satisfy me but the characters were cute, it was an interesting take on fandom and fangirl behaviour. Though I was never really part of a fandom, I think everyone who is in that realm will appreciate the representation and the focus on it.
Truly, if [b: I Was Born for This|34325090|I Was Born for This|Alice Oseman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1517511429l/34325090._SY75_.jpg|55388138] didn't make you reminiscing the good ol' fandom days, then I think you're the one who read it wrong.
Along with Fereshteh “Angel” Rahimi and famous rock band The Ark, this book highlights the impacts of fandom and, well, media consumption in general in people’s, especially teenagers’ life—I wouldn’t say it’s written to an extent of criticising the tendency of fans to develop an unhealthy fixation, even though the underlying meaning of it is there, the main subject is not criticising it. As someone who had a phase like Angel Rahimi has, [b: I Was Born For This|34325090|I Was Born for This|Alice Oseman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1517511429l/34325090._SY75_.jpg|55388138] is horrifyingly authentic and realistic, in the bestest way possible. Oseman really knows how to write every knowledge they have regarding the internet, especially fandom culture, and combining it with likeable and just totally lovely characters.
Though I said that, I feel something was a little bit off with the plot. It’s fun to read, yes … and it has the typical Oseman’s page-turner writing style, yes, which made me finish this book in less than twenty-four hours … but I didn’t really fancy the rushed ending. It was a nice ending, but the turn the plot took to reach the ending? Mmm. Not really my cup of tea, but the characters plus the well done Moslem, BIPOC and LGBT representation and Oseman’s writing style already made up for it, so I don’t really mind.
I’ll give this one 4,5/5 rounded down.

Allez. Tous. Lire. Ce. Livre.
Vous me remercierez après.

So before we start lets lay out a few trigger warnings there’s alcohol abuse, panic attacks, and discussion of depression and suicide; mental illness is a key feature of the book.
It’s be a long while since I’ve come away so intensely invested in a contemporary young adult novel, and this one hit me hard. Crying in my bed at one in the morning hard. It reminded me so much of teenage fandom, even in the way it was written, and draws attention to the implications for both sides. The dual perspectives really pushed the book forward and the insight into how both parties were feeling was definitely needed!
Alice Oseman manages to make it feel like I’m reading a teenage perspective, and then give both Jimmy and Angel distinct voices that really show their different personalities. I loved the fact that every character felt human and three dimensional, and the relationships are all so complex. She shows the difficulties of fame, how hard it can be to meet an internet friend in real life, and how sometimes breaking up is the best choice for both people. Oseman manages to powerfully portray emotion without romanticising things, which is why I think this book hit me so hard. The depiction of Jimmy’s intense anxiety and how life limiting it can be was so frank and honest, and really drew attention to how sometimes you have to put yourself first.
The discussion of fandom in this book is also so painfully accurate, and reminded of my own teenage experience in the tumblr days or yore. I Was Born for This really shows the good, bad, and just plain ugly sides of fandom. It felt so much like my own experience! I’ve had friendships formed via fandom that have lasted years, and sometimes having a fandom in common does not a good friendship make.
The story is a peak inside of both Jimmy and Angels lives. It happens over a four day period, and the ending is rather open. I know this style isn’t for everyone but I loved the fact that there’s no complete resolution, it felt like real life; there’s no neat little bow tying up all of the characters endings, instead they go off to continue their lives and we’re cut out of the loop.
I Was Born for This really made me feel something while I was reading, and I was pulled into the storyline; I just haven’t been that invested in a contemporary literature for a very long time.
Recommend: Definitely, this is a fantastic example of mental health in books being dealt with well.

- I loved everything about this book apart from one of the narrators really annoyed me - Angel just seemed way too invested
- The way Angel left Juliet because she wasn't as fangirly over The Ark as her really got on my nerves - no real friend would do something like that
- I really wish that The Ark was a real band - the things I would do to listen to their music and go to their concerts
- I loved all the representation in this book of so many different groups
- I liked how Alice showcased how it is behind the scenes of a big music group, especially showing how it can affect the members of the group mentally
- I wanted to wrap Jimmy in bubble wrap to protect him from all the things that cause him anxiety
This book is most definitely one of my comfort reads which is to be expected with any book by Alice at this point.
