Even better than the first, Novik expands greatly on the foundation she laid with His Majesty's Dragon with some first-rate worldbuilding and just enough historical and nautical detail to give the story flavor without being confusing.

“I haven’t been injured” was literally stabbed

A lot of this story is spent on a boat and it definitely feels like a middle book but still very enjoyable

Quite slow moving at times, but delightful nonetheless. Female-gaze written men are simply better in all regards

This one didn't hit quite as hard as the first book. The journey to China felt both too long and not long enough, with some parts feeling very slow. Once they get to China the pace picks up, but it seemed like the problem was solved a bit too easily. I will be continuing the series, but I'm hoping we get less about the philosophy of raising dragons in the next one.
