This book was before Jan Brett found her style. There are no margin paintings. And yet, the book is beautiful and the art is fantastic. I like the story of the pony overcoming his 'station' in life. It's about looking deeper at things. This has to be one of Jan's first books. She has a strong voice from the beginning.
The kids were a fan of this one too. It's a quick and easy read and my niece read this one to us. They gave it 4 stars as well.

Maybe reading a stack of Brett's book all at one time isn't wise. I'm finding most of her prose boring and the stories themselves lack excitement. Not even the illustrations for this book are up to her standard.

Beautiful illustrations accompany this sweet story about a pony who was not beautiful, but was useful and brave and helpful.

My beloved partner calls this "the class traitor", which always makes me laugh. "Who do you think destroyed that bridge," he says. "What did he do with all the other ponies?"
(This remains one of my favorite books.)
