Chipped pearls is the second book in the Elvira Slate series. Elvira’s private detective company is off the ground, but it’s not attracting enough business to keep her afloat. When she get a job offer that she desperately needs, will it be all it’s cracked up to be?

I really enjoyed going back to the world of Elvira Slate in this book. I am a sucker for short chapters and a strong female lead which this book gave me by the bucketful. I also love that it’s not just Elvira that shows such strength, their are other female/minority characters that portray so much strength in these books. I love the representation, and the important mention of how these people have been treated in the past. I loved delving a little deeper into Elvira’s past, I want to learn more about her!

Although this would work as a standalone, I think reading the first book in the series helps to understand more about the side characters. I struggled with the number of characters in the first book but had slightly less trouble in this book (although I still experienced it sometimes). I loved the complex ending, it’s tied up well, but not necessarily in a way that people would want it to be. Sometimes I found myself losing focus early on in the book, especially with the descriptions of clothes which my mind glosses over. But the last section of the book kept me glued to the pages! I can’t wait to see what happens to Elvira next!

I would recommend this series to any fans of historical mysteries/noir with a female lead! I want to thank Helen Jacey and Shedunnit productions for allowing me to read this book and give my personal thoughts.
