Driving carriages through massive tunnels under his mansion and practising primitive brain surgery, the fifth Duke of Portland is a Victorian eccentric brought to life in this amazing novel.

Diary entries from the main character with brief snippets from peripheral characters follow the Duke through a six month period. I enjoyed the voices of the characters and author's use of language. Most of the book is in the Duke's head and there is not a lot of action until near the end.

Was ok, sometimes good sometimes average

Found this one trawling goodreads recs - the Victorian age setting and eccentric protagonist definitely hit my book buttons, and the diary format ended up being a theme of my recent reads, which was vaguely entertaining. But overall, I was underwhelmed, although the ending will absolutely stick in my head (pun intended!) for some time.

Loved the setup, the style, and the characters, and for the first half, I thought this would be a great book. But it never really goes anywhere until the last few pages. It feels a waste of an extremely memorable character.
