Really disappointed after reading A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. It's a modernized, globalized Death of a Salesman, as I think other reviews have mentioned. And other reviews have also mentioned the gorgeous book cover - too bad the story inside isn't as beautiful. Gaze upon the cover, but put it back down and go find something better to open and read.

A satirical, deceptively easy read. A modern parable of today's society. Quite enjoyable !

A good read. Deep, lots to think about, but also very evocative of a feeling of listlessness, dreamlike state. A "what am I doing here" kind of feel that I've had traveling abroad as well. Poetic in its melancholy. “The work of man is done behind the back of the natural world. When nature notices, and can muster the energy, it wipes the slate clean again.”
“People think you’re able to help them and usually you can’t,” he writes. “And so it becomes a process of choosing the one or two people you try hardest not to disappoint."

The title and cover made me think this would be a sci-fi book. It was not. I enjoyed the writing style even if I did not enjoy the story of a literally and figuratively impotent middle aged white man.

I liked it. A strange, quick read that doesn't seem to go anywhere, but still takes a journey.

Superbly written. Eggers doesn't ramble or overly describe or get too tangential. I read "Heartbreaking Work" a while ago and never forgave him for the indulgence even though it was his first book. Clearly he's matured and "Hologram" is intensely readable. I tore through it. The main character is flawed and depressingly relatable for me. But his undeniably good heart shows through his crushing world-weariness. And though the ending was essentially a happy one I give the book a less than perfect grade because it was such a bummer reflection of my own dead end career path. It was hard to shake the feeling of a slow and very real slide into impotent irrelevance.

It wasn't that I thought it was a bad book, but I just didn't get what people think is so great about it. I have enjoyed other books from Dave Eggers much more.....
