I am consistently impressed with David Ebenbach. Each style that he tries ends as successfully as the last. His recent book of poetry is no exception. The imagery invoked in We Were the People Who Moved gave each poem such grounding in place that I could experience New York, Washington, and Richmond, Indiana among the places included. I was particularly drawn to those poems where either glimpses of or whole chunks of Richmond shone through, since it has been my home for seven years. I also appreciated those poems that explored work and the value of work, as those are questions I’m currently grappling with. I found myself laughing, sympathizing, re-reading, and appreciating so many poems in this collection. I suspect I will return to these poems sometime and find other images and themes to draw me in.
