What a work of art. Exquisite.

Wow

This was a very dark read at times and very confusing. However, this book is meant to portray this dark and uncomfortable aura. I enjoyed being a captive in the dark. I enjoyed the darkness that lured in the corners.

Reread, so review update;

Looking back at baby me and thinking this was dark.. when in fact I have now read darker. But I still hold onto the fact that this made me uncomfy my first time around.

Captive in the Dark follows Olivia, who obtains the nickname Kitten by her captor, and her Captor Caleb. Caleb is out for revenge and in order to get close to the person he wants to take down, he has to work in the skin trade, aka training and selling sex slaves. He manages to get himself seen and known when he comes across a young woman he takes a liking to her and knows she will be the perfect candidate for his plan.

What Caleb doesn't plan on is his kitten to be very different than the girl he saw on the streets. Olivia has lived her entire life to be docile and never to be seen, but this is just an act that she puts on in the daylight in order to save herself from predators. And when she is being held captive, she shows Caleb just who she is. And because of this, Caleb begins to grow weak for her.

Olivia is cunning and smart, she ends up using Caleb's infatuation with her to her advantage.

The biggest problem, is that Caleb needs her to enact his revenge. But can he do it??

Very...difficult book. That's all I can say. To be honest, I have no idea how this two can work in a normal relationship. After all both of them have been through? I know that in the end there will be happy end, but i can't imagine it.

It is pretty well written, I must admit (better than most erotica for sure), but the with main purpose was being erotic, I was left unfulfilled. the reason being:
SpoilerAll the do is butt stuff! they don't even have actual sex. It was such a complete turn-off.

Also, it's really a personal preference, but I don't exactly want to picture a Pakistani slave auction, even in my dark erotica. I guess it's the modern equivalent of an arab harem you see in a lot of other erotic romances, but I never quite liked those either. When I read the synopsis I didn't expect them to bring in a terrorist subplot. I feel like they should have just stuck to the cartel or something since they had it take place in Mexico.

TLDL:
Pretty well written, but I wasn't into it. others might be, However.

I absolutely loved this book! I loved the variations in the narration, the motives behind every action and the characters were so enticing. I really wish the novel was longer, but just found out the second book is available! I can't wait to find out what happens next!

¡JODER! ay madre santa D: tantos sentimientos que me dan al leer este libro, no se... es tan confuso. No debería sentir algún cariño por Caleb pero diantres... el chico esta roto y más de lo deja mostrar.

Review for books 1 and 2 -- Warning: I don't see how I can write this without some spoilers. So be warned in advanced.

I really don't know what to say about this book other than I really just kind of hated it. I got through the first one out of morbid curiosity. I felt uncomfortable reading it the entire time. I didn't like I didn't feel that I had anyone to root for. In skimming the reviews, I feel like it's pegged as a love story. And the title of book 2, Seduced in the Dark, also makes it sound that way. But for me, I couldn't get behind any resemblance of a relationship between the main characters. I found it disturbing and terribly inappropriate. I mean, Caleb freaking butt rapes her but it's written like it's really okay since she came multiple times. Really!!!!!!!!!!!!????????? I mean, come on. He raped her!!!!!!!!!!!!! The only reason he didn't go the "traditional" route is because he needed her to be a virgin so he could sell her as a pleasure slave at a virgin auction to a terrible Russian mobster. Um. NONE OF THIS IS OKAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The worst part for me is the supposed feelings she developed for him. I understand stockholm syndrome, and I can get to an extent, but I feel like it's written in a way that the author wants the reader to have it too. Uh uh. Didn't work on me.

Okay. yes. I realize that the main guy, Caleb, had a terrible child-hood. I realize he was raped over and over in the butt my nasty old men that get off from that. I realize that he feels indebted to Rafiq for saving him. But he was so devastated by what happened to him that he wanted to kill his "pimp" and did without remorse. Instead of, Idk, turning around and getting away from that life, what does he do? He freaking does it other poor girls. He takes them and turns them into pleasure slaves over and over again. How the heck does that make him ANY better than the man who did it to him? huh? Yes. What happened to him was terrible. But it's no excuse for growing up and turning into the man he hated.

In book 2, we know she gets rescued and never made it to the auction. Thank goodness! But we are left with an emotional girl grieving her beloved "monster with a heart of gold". Gag me. We also get new characters with far too much of their own story line. I made approximately 1/3 of the way through before I had to just put it down. I thought maybe I'd eventually come back to it, and maybe it would end in a way that I could accept, but I just couldn't. It's been over a weak since I last picked it up and I have zero desire to return to it. So book 2 is officially dnf for me.

Part of me thinks I should have never picked this book up. And really, I shouldn't have when it comes down to it. I guess I finally did because 1) it was easy to find and 2) it had a lot of good reviews. So I thought hey, this can't be that bad or disturbing. No no no. It really is that disturbing.

So I'm rating book 1 only 1 star and not rating book 2 since I didn't finish it. That is me being nice.

Uncertain of what to think of this book. It started great but slowly became a slog to read for me.

The story is pretty dark though. Rape and abusiveness. Not for the faint hearted.

Fast read

A book that you both want to put down but can’t. It was both entrancing and yet grotesque. I look forward to reading the next book.
