When I first picked this thriller up I was NOT enthralled. I put it down for a few days and only recently picked it up again. I should have stuck with my gut...then I wouldn’t be starting off my 2018 year of reviews on such a mediocre note.

The plot of Center of Gravity is simple, maybe too much so: Woman marries man, discovers he’s an abusive a-hole, he takes custody of (AKA kidnaps) their two boys and spreads rumors that she is an unfit mother. Oh, and there’s a first-wife in his past as well that died under suspicious circumstances. There was nothing unpredictable or shocking in the unraveling of the events, which made for a pretty monotonous read….in fact, I skimmed the last few chapters just to say I finished the book.

The reason I put this book down in the first place was because I was immediately annoyed by the way the author portrays the eight-year old son, Jack. No, eight-year old boy speaks or thinks this way. The author does not know how to write in different voices. In every chapter where she switched voices, and she does it a lot, I almost always had to read the chapter headers to know who was speaking. Never a good sign.

Very lackluster “thriller.”

BRILLIANT WORK LAURA MCNEILL! I am in awe. It's like Gone Girl but a bit toned down. I find myself not able to put it down at night (but I had to since I have exams lol) I actually read it in the bus on the way home because that was the only time I am free and gosh, this is just amazing! Really guys, you should read it if you like mystery novels and psychopaths!
