What a read! Gorgeous language and illustrations and a really compelling story. Michael was a delightful character to follow along. At times I wanted more of certain themes especially as Michael grows up and the drag part of the narrative starts. It kind of loses the discussion of family and racial identity then, and the pacing suffers a bit as well. Still, a wonderful read!

I've been meaning to read this for a long time, but I wasn't expecting it to be sooo good. The writing is magnificent, the poems throughout are beautiful, and the story and characters are griping and relatable as well. It made me cry several times, but some of those were good tears. If you like a self discovering story, I'll recommend it to you; but the writing is what make it a 5-star read, and I think anybody will like it for that only.
