After years and years of meaning to, I’m finally reading The Hobbit and LOTR. Yay!

I didn’t know this was a children’s book at first, so I was a bit surprised at the simple writing and explaining. For some reason I was expecting adult fantasy!

I've tried to like the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit but I just don't find them engaging. The voices in this production were gearing but it did help pass some time in the car.

It was quite interesting I won't lie, I liked Bilbo the most because he had clear character progression throughout. Gandalf I had mixed feelings about but overall he was a cool guy.

It just got a bit boring after the barrels and the spiders? I reached the scenes with the dragon Smaug, and then I remember he died, and nothing after that was really of relevance. Just didn't interest me after that, but overall not too bad.

When I finished The Hobbit as a child, I wished that I could read Bilbo's memoir, "There and Back Again, A Hobbit's Holiday." In rereading this book that is exactly what I got the chance to do! In the 30 years in between my readings of this book, I've read the Lord of the Rings and my affection for Bilbo has grown. Introducing Bilbo, Gandalf and Co. to the kids has been a real joy. As I read it out loud I noticed that the book has aged. Sadly it will I fear turn like other classics (Mary Poppins, Treasure Island, etc.) into treasured books of the past that have no connection with children of the future.

I enjoyed this precursor to [b:the Lord of the Rings|34|The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, Part 1)|J.R.R. Tolkien|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1156043001s/34.jpg|3204327] trilogy, but it lacked the flare of the latter.

Don't kill me, but the Hobbit just wasn't for me, at least not at this time. I'm not sure why I've never been able to love it as I read it, but perhaps one day it will click. Until then...
