Okay that book flew by so let's see if I can remember the gist of what happened.

Sofia & Derek are on their honeymoon when they get abducted by Kiev, one of the Elders' 'children'. He beats the pulp out of Derek (who btw is a human) while keeping Sofia captive. He winds up seeing the light in her and doesn't do much to harm her, especially once he senses she is pregnant (with twins). Upon being captured, Sofia realizes that Abby is also at The Blood Keep with Kiev's sister, Clara (who grossly is infatuated with Kiev, to his disgust, and he is her "toy" for the next 80 years as punishment from the Elder who 'fathered' him). Sofia tells Kiev she is going to name her son Benjamin, her daughter Abby. Abby's parents both were slaughtered in front of Abby.

Back at The Shade, Vivienne and Aiden are in charge of trying to keep peace between the hunters and the remaining vampires when the Elders attack and take over the Shade. They also are trying to open 'the portal' that Corinne had known was hidden all along at the Shade. While this takeover is happening, Corinne gets kicked out of her area of the Shade and Derek winds up getting rescued by the Ageless. When he is in The Sanctuary, he finds out that there are two wars going on: mortals (hunters) vs. immortals (vampires) on Earth, but in a different realm it is The Ageless/Elders (immortals) vs. The Guardians (hunters that are some kind of transcended?), of which Arron (Aiden's superior) is one. He reveals this at the end of the book.

While Derek is in The Sanctuary, he realizes that he is still healing quickly, despite no longer being a vampire. He also finds out that because of Cora's love for him, she (and others?) had been transferring powers to him that were unreachable until he was transformed back into a human. The key part of his 'new powers' is that he can basically create fire. He is trying to learn to control it but wants to get out of there so he can rescue Sofia (not knowing himself that she is pregnant).

Sofia winds up convincing Kiev to bring Eli to her (a vampire from The Shade, kind of a background character) to "keep her company through pregnancy" and they wind up concocting an escape plan. Kiev also wants to help Sofia escape, separately, because of her good/light but he realizes that deep down his intentions are still dark and evil. Sofia's light is also starting to diminish, allowing the Elder to finally come to her as a chill, dark, foreboding feeling. He hurts her but not severely enough to harm the babies; Kiev finds out that the Elder finally got to her and is torn. Sofia winds up escaping with Eli after he trains a vampire dog that has been keeping Sofia in line, to align with them, and she winds up giving birth in a shack outside The Blood Keep (with Derek and Corinne, among a few others I think, present). But the son she has gets snatched, Derek sends Corinne away with the daughter and they wind up back at hunter HQ.

Before Derek finds Sofia, he returned to the Shade in time to see that the Elders were using the vampires as vessels, destroying most of the humans and pitting the vampires who were in love with each other into death matches. Xavier was possessed possibly the *THE* Elder himself (although there are multiple, this is the one I think the series refers to the entire time) and is making advances on Vivienne right after Vivienne realized that she really did love Xavier. Claudia gets beaten to a pulp by Yuri, Ashley rips Sam's heart out. Derek shows up in the middle of this and he winds up losing control and kills the two vessels/Elders that were holding him back. Once the Elders realized that Derek actually killed one of them (which later in the book it appears that they aren't supposed to be able to die in the Earth realm), the Elders mostly leave. He winds up freeing a few of the other vampires from their Elders and keeps them intact.

After Sofia gave birth, the Ageless took Corinne's powers and took Sofia and gave her to The Cruor. At the end of the book, Sofia is in a white palace (the Ageless's I'm to assume) and Clara (Kiev's sister) shows up with a glass of blood. Sofia realizes she's craving it, vaguely even remembers her name or Derek's name. When Clara tries to dig out of her if she remembers a man or his name, Sofia does remember but mostly keeps it to herself. Then she grabs the glass of blood, drinks it, and realizes she somehow turned into a vampire...

Oh and PS - Aedin vows to become a guardian if the guardians will save Sofia

On another note I'm very intrigued by Kiev and even though I love Derek, I think I'm gonna really end up loving Kiev
