Just based on the description alone, plus the fact that I’ve loved Sarah Langan‘s Good Neighbors, I had high expectations for this one - and it surpassed even those, I loved this book so much!
I love the trope of a seemingly perfect suburban neighborhood having a dark side, I love cults, I love dystopian stories, and this book had all of that. And it was so, so good. Sarah Langan perfectly created the atmosphere of “something’s off”. I got so nervous while reading this! The Farmer-Bowens and especially Linda were described so well, they felt like a real family with real emotions and worries and sometimes complicated relationships.
There’s also a lot about privilege, snobbery, greed and ruthlessness in this book. It’s set in a dystopian near-future where the world is falling apart and into chaos, and company towns are the last “safe havens” with clean drinking water, enough food, clean air, no crime and so on. But then we see what’s behind the beautiful facade and how exactly they’re able to sustain it. It’s probably not a spoiler to say it’s not pretty.
The audiobook was awesome too. I would probably put this in a suspense/Sci-Fi category. It’s definitely on my favorites list!
