How do you manage to make a book about pirates and buried treasure so boring? This book gets brought up a lot as the book that ruined reading for people forced to read it in middle school- I know I read it at some point but kinda forgot; how bad could it be? Well, pretty boring. I respect that it started the pirate genre and we wouldn't have classic stories like "Pirates of the Caribbean" or "Muppets Treasure Island" without it, but man the storytelling is rough. It's like the author himself even realized halfway through that the narrative being told through Jim Hawkins doesn't work, and has to awkwardly go "uhh, this next section is important to the plot, but Jim wasn't there so... I'm just gonna announce that this part is from someone else's perspective and then let's forget I ever did that!" Overall I was just disappointed, I really wanted to like this book.

I read this as a child and I just reread it now on a whim. It really holds up! It's an excellent adventure story, which codifies so many now familiar pirate story tropes. It has a wonderful atmosphere, lots of tense scenes and reversals of fortune. And of course the standout character of Long John Silver, the most charming and obsequious of villains. Very much recommend.
Moderate: Violence
weird christian message randomly thrown in for no reason other than vibes. jim is silvers boyfriend x read most of this on a boat journey so that was really fun. do recommend

This was was my first time listening to an audio drama and it was so good! I was hooked right from the start. The combination of great voiceovers and sound effects enabled me to easily imagine visuals of the scenery and action in my head. The story is simple enough to follow and contains all the elements one would expect in an adventure story. I was always fascinated by pirates as a child and my interest still remains high to this day!
