Was this grief's only gift? The eradication of the highs, by way of leveling the lows?
This is part of a collection of Amazon original stories called "Creature Feature", and has some pretty big modern horror names attached: Malerman, Paul Tremblay, Joe Hill, Grady Hendrix. The Original Stories series is, at least for now and hopefully going forward, available for free for Kindle Unlimited readers and this particular collection includes the audio versions for free as well. I don't seem to be able to focus well on audio for an entire book, but I'd love to hear this short story performed.
Brenda and Amanda are precocious Michigan teenage sisters. Brenda makes movies, Amanda stars in them. Their lives are pretty promising and groovy until Amanda disappears in the woods one night. But while participating in the search party, Brenda hears the other searchers whisper to one another about a local campfire legend. About a magical bridge and a face-stealing imp named Opso.
Brenda can't get this Opso guy out of her head and is convinced--in an army of one sort of way--he's responsible for Amanda's disappearance. And this is a horror story after all. Moreover, it's a horror story with fairy tale DNA. Maybe he is?

In unrelated news, I miss Adventure Time
I was into the story for 3/4 of the way. I can't quite decide on the ending but I'm not mad, I guess. I think maybe I'm rating it too high but I also think Malerman's writing on this is absolutely baller: the story has a chilly, goosefleshy vibe right from the jump.
I can also vouch that Malerman's novel [b:Bird Box|44646576|Bird Box (Bird Box, #1)|Josh Malerman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1570393096l/44646576._SY75_.jpg|26186624] (not the movie, don't watch the stupid movie) will leave you freaked out for a long time.
