A short story about a woman looking for her sister who disappeared in the woods and the stories of a faceless creature . . . Spooky!
I genuinely thought the first half of this book was creepy. I thought it was well written and had good pacing.
The second act left me with too many questions too be more than a three star. Honestly, I wish this had been a longer story.

I read and listened to the audiobook as well. The narrator made this story much better.

A budding teenage filmmaker searches for her lost sister only to discover a supernatural surprise in the woods. It’s short, it’s well-produced, it’s actually a pretty decent YA yarn that just about anybody could kill a spooky 90 minutes with. But its done with a lot of sentimental purple prose that can be pretty eye-rolling. Simplistic, written for teens but not unpleasant. Also, didn’t know I could get audiobooks from kindle unlimited now?

J’ai bien aimé la description du lien entre les deux sœurs, leur courage et la mythologie. J’aurais adoré en savoir plus et lire une version longue de l’histoire.

This is another in the “creature feature” short story collection and seems to be a version of the “troll under the bridge” story. It is about a girl whose sister goes missing in the woods where there is a legend of a mysterious bridge and a creature who lures people there to steal their faces. (Yikes!) The girl goes into the woods with camping gear and recording equipment to find her sister and document the existence of the monster. I thought this was spooky and atmospheric but I found the ending unsatisfying.
So, I initially thought the whole idea of the monster in this novella was a little hokey; but it doesn't matter. The way in which this story is told, the building tension arriving at a shrieking climax was fantastic. This is the first I've read of Josh Malerman's work - I guess I should move him up higher on my TBR!
