The orphaned governess and the strict former captain. He is instantly drawn to her and wants to find any reason to get rid of her when she isn't working up to his standards. But she works around the kids and their limitations not through them. So he doesn't quite get it. He just knows when he falls he fails at work and he is really drawn to her.
This was such a fun book. The children were delightful and I loved how the uncle was a huge part of their life and became even bigger at the end. There was also a rambunctious dog that was not helping get work done.
The ending was so sweet. It took awhile and a lot of uncovered truths to get there. But they both were attracted to each other.
Loved how she tried to give the excuse as just wanting a try cause she would never marry and then walking away. They can never just walk away.

What a delightful book. A Regency twist on The Sound of Music. And so refreshing to read realistic, yet charming children. The audiobook narrators were great, too.

Certain starchy heroes hit just right. That includes Captain Harry Kincaid, MMC of this book. This guy is starchy, OK? He carries two pocket watches so he can be sure never to be late even if one were to stop working; he gets "twitchy" whenever his strict schedule is interrupted; his job is basically purchasing logistics for the entire British navy. Unexpectedly left in charge of his nephew and nieces, he hires a governess to take charge and make sure his life runs on its usual impeccable schedule.

Georgie, the governess, is passionate about treating children like people, meaning that she doesn't think they should be cooped up inside for 7 hours a day or be "seen and not heard." This seems like it's setting up an order/chaos opposites attract romance. But it turns out that Georgie and Harry are some truly remarkable characters: they are both able to change their minds when presented with new evidence. They also both appreciate competence, and they're both good at their jobs.

Virginia Heath has a knack for writing humor, and this book is really funny. It's also a Regency romcom that tackles professional burnout - and does that really well!

39-Word Summaries:

Laine: Starchy military guy is suddenly in charge of three kids. He hires a governess who is unfortunately hot and quotes military dudes. Harry ruined his life for a woman once, he needs to learn to ruin it for himself.

Meg: What do you do with a hero who’s so starchy he needs two pocket watches just in case he forgets to wind one? (He would never forget.) First step? Fall in love. Second step? Muss him up (of course).

I received an ARC of this book, my first from the author, and it was cute! I enjoyed the setting willed Georgie, all her quirks a seemingly perfect match for the atypical lifestyle of her charges, the charges themselves, little lovable trouble makers, and Harry, who is in himself such a juxtaposition of light hearted and quite serious. While each of their upbringings informed their temperament, the more each learns of the other, their commonalities grow as does their appreciation and respect, eventually to passion and love. While this book skewed a bit verbose, I did enjoy the story and there were several scenes that made me laugh out loud! I also thought the ending was adorable and came full circle!
