Hardboiled yet darkly humorous African American mystery series of the 1950s and 60s. This entry opens with an absurd action scene and continues apace. I found it a bit hard to follow at first with references to various unnamed characters, but it all wrapped up in the end.

Now this is a good detective story! I really liked it - unbelievably gritty and dark, which is just how I like it. I will definitely be picking up his other books!
