So much fun to revisit this year of brilliant movies, hear how they came to be, and immediately start watching the ones that I missed.

Reread with Eliza and enjoying watching her discover these films.

Loved this nostalgia bomb through my freshman year of high school. Gonna go rewatch Fight Club. "You are not the contents of your wallet."

Best. Movie. Year. Ever. is about the movies of 1999 - considered to be the last 'great' year of movies - got made. I haven't seen enough of these movies (and will never see Blair Witch, because I'm too scared), but it was still a great read. Rather than being about the movies themselves, it was about how the late 90s in Hollywood were a time of innovative storytelling in film and the conditions that allowed these stories to be told. If there's an issue with this book, it's that the films of this era were made by predominantly white, male directors. There's a brief mention of it in the epilogue, but that's it. The epilogue is good, and it goes a little bit into why there hasn't been a "great" movie year since - Hollywood has changed, and there's no longer room for mid-budget films anymore, they're either franchise blockbusters or small, independent films. It also brought up the rise of television - 1999 is the year that The Sopranos debuted, beginning a golden age of television. It almost serves as a prequel for Alan Sepinwall's The Revolution Was Televised, which is about the beginning of that golden age.

Also, the title isn't suggesting that 1999 was the best movie year ever. It's a comment on how the internet immediately (or even prematurely) judges something the "best," or "worst," with nothing in between.

I read a lot of pop culture books, and this one stands out among the rest. Meticulously researched, expertly sourced and very informative- I learned a lot! Now time to start on a 1999 movie binge...
