Sure, if you're a die-hard Matrix or Star Wars Episode I fan, you've already seen all the behind-the-scenes footage of the making of your favorite films, but for lesser-known titles and/or less die-hard fans, it's still interesting to learn about the making of many great films.

3 1/2 stars.

A bit surface level but very entertaining and makes a very compelling argument for the strength of this year in film

First off, I don’t think this is a book. That’s no disrespect to Raferty; but a book needs some unifying thesis, and this feels more like a year-long series of anniversary articles for a magazine. You can see Raferty grasping for a thesis as he tries to argue that 1999 marked a peak of filmmaking, but I don’t think it gets there any more than you could say 1982 was a peak of filmmaking. Sometimes a lot of good movies come out in a given year, and you need more than a coincidence of the calendar to say why. I think the book is on to something about 90s culture, but sitting on the hook of 1999 only stifles it from going deeper.
