Reading this was like a high school reunion I actually wanted to go to.
somewhere between 2.5 and 3 stars
Interesting enough concept that was given an unfortunately shallow treatment. The bold proclamation in the title is never really given supporting evidence. Very little historical context is given for the environment that gave rise to these movies: the book mostly just mentions the widespread suburban/middle class malaise, the Columbine shooting and the Clinton affair/impeachment. The book mentions some shared themes for the movies it covers but chooses to organize itself chronologically by seasons of the year instead of the common themes. Not a bad read but feels more like a selection of individual articles from a pop culture magazine rather than a manuscript with a well thought out and supported thesis.

Not sure what I was expecting, but it mostly felt like a collection of nostalgia.

Read about the movies I have watched. May go back and finish once I watch the other movies covered in the book.

I really enjoyed this book, I actually learned quite a few things I didn’t know. The author really seemed to know his stuff and seemed well regarded- he got quite a number of interviews with pertinent people. I don’t necessarily agree or buy the author’s argument that 1999 was the best movie year ever, but I think it was definitely a transformative year for film (that’s not as exciting for a title though). Overall a very entertaining read!
