Although some parts were really confusing I have to admit there were some moments where tears were shed

Once Were Warriors is a powerful portrayal of difficult life in Aoetearoa. This book explores a lot of hard truths about society in such a raw, gut-wrenching way. When I first started reading, I found it difficult to get into the rythym of the storytelling. There was constant change of perspective throughout. However, it was a clever device used by Alan Duff to create a voice for these imperfect people in a way that accurately depicts alcoholic and traumatized minds. I found the various characters different ways of dealing with the various themes in their storys depicted amazingly the individual experience. Not everyone will think the same or act the same. Additionally, the human condition of "who I want to be" vs. "who I am" was written very cleverly. I also enjoyed the progressive connection to Maori culture and the importance of rediscovery and community. This story was emotional and, most importantly, real.

it took me so long to finish this. The style of the writing was interesting however I found it very dense and I often found myself lost. I also had to stop because of the sense of despair that i kept feeling throughout the book. But wow - what a powerful story.

New Zealand. A good story and interesting look into a section of Maori society in modern NZ

A striking, strong story filled with strong characters, a story that is relevant not only to New Zealanders but also to people elsewhere.
Despite the relevance of the story and the author's intentions,to me, the narrative is unnecessarily complex. I am not looking for overtly simplified books but in the way the story is told, it does not add much too it, the changes between the introspective moments and discussions between characters are not ideal.
