For all that Frances Hodgson Burnett's classism is more evident in this book than either of her more popular books, there is still something charming about a boy who is very good and innocent becoming a lord. It's rather like a Cinderella story really. And I'm a sucker for redemption stories too, as Cedric's grandfather changes for the better.
I cannot believe it's taken me over 40 years to finally read this utterly charming and cozy classic!
My Italian great-grandmother, Lena, collected china dolls that represented classic book characters (and more) when I was young. She had a floor to ceiling glass case in her living room completely full of dolls like this (including Snow White, Cinderella, etc.) and one of them included Little Lord Fauntleroy. When she passed away (when was 19), I was given the Little Lord Fauntleroy doll. For some reason, the way they constructed his facial features freaked me out a bit and I donated the doll after a few years. Now, I wish I hadn't! (well, maybe)
Because of this strange doll (and his pretentious name), I had a resistance to reading the book, even though I love many books by Frances Hodgson Burnett. But, now, I'm kicking myself for waiting so long because I loved this story SO SO much!
