Great story, but the age of this book really shows in the continuously "playfully (and sometimes not-so-playfully) racist" descriptions of a secondary character, and lazy writing of another character who has gotten fat since the previous books, which is used as a negative character trait. The TV series did a pretty good job of leaving the weirdness out while keeping most of the story in place, though.

This book does not deserve my energy in writing a review but here are some thoughts I had while reading:
  • The racist stereotypes
  • The rape
  • Even when they’re technically consenting, the age gaps in relationships. They are not okay
  • The fatphobia
  • I don’t want to have to reread the book to find evidence but I feel like Jamie definitely lied to Claire about not having remarried or had children. And after Laogharie? he definitely should have brought up his son.
  • Gabaldon just needs an editor.

The Outlander series is simply AMAZING. I have read the entire series through multiple times. Reading the book description, it wouldn't normally be something I chose, but im so glad I did! Now I am a FOREVER FAN. If you love to read, you need to give the series a chance...you will fall in love with the Fraser Clan!!!!

This one was tough for me to get through. Some parts I liked, but there were too many things that left a bitter taste in my mouth. The racism was bad.
Every mention of Yi Tien Cho using the C slur? Yikes. Frank saying some racist stuff? Oof. The treatment of the enslaved people? Horrifying. But, I was surprised at the part at the sale of enslaved people when Claire freaked out but acknowledged that she wasn’t doing it for any of the people being sold, but for herself. It’s a startlingly modern moment, but an important one I think, cause Claire isn’t really an ally like they tried to make her in the show, and this thought really reflects that. Anyways.
Jamie, to my horror,
sexually assaulted Geneva (and yes it was assault because she told him to stop and he didn’t. Her blackmailing him is bad, yes, but two wrongs don’t make a right),
and I was incredibly angry and am still not over it. And the fatphobia in this book became honestly unbearable. Among other things,
telling your daughter not to get fat in your farewell letter to her before you go back into the past forever?
Good god. So, safe to say this is my least favorite of the books by a mile.
