This book is unbelievably bad.

It feels like it was written by angsty teenager with a limited understanding of theology, sociology and computer software.

And that's the worst thing about it. Stephenson's techno futuristic world is evocative. It draws you in, so much so that you can smell the places he describes. It's such a shame that the plot and Stephenson's inability to trust the readers critical thinking skills, ruins it.

This book didn't have to be 71 chapters long. There are entire sections that could be removed to make a more interesting read. There are chapters and chapters of the characters exposé dumping revelations that were revealed in the previous chapter. The characters themselves don't hold much substance. Nobody talks like these characters, it's almost infuriating reading their dialogue and actions.

This sucks. The premise, the characters themselves, the world it's based in are so individually interesting but the execution is horrendous. The only reason I can't rate it lower is because it could've been interesting! It could've been a really good book! Instead I have to live with the what if's and what could've been's.

There's no denying that Snow Crash is self-aware, over the top, and somewhat cheesy. The plot is pretty good, but its main draw is the fantastic world building and criticisms of late-stage capitalism and technological fetishism. It drags a bit in the middle, and like a lot of cyberpunk has third-act/resolution problems. "Hiro Protagonist" might give you second thought to picking it up, but this book would not work as well if Stephenson had tried to take it more seriously.

holy SHIT.

Read this because it's supposedly a sci-fi classic. But instead I got an erotically-written PEDO sex scene, where the 15 year old female protagonist gets raped by a violent mass murderer twice her age? And why is she written to have enjoyed it?????? WHY was that necessary? Weird weird shit.

A shame, because the first few chapters are actually quite fun, and the book has some cool ideas. But a book written in the 90s should NOT be considered a classic, no matter how smart it is, if it peddles weird pedo fantasies.

Funny, interesting, but at times a bit of a slog. Some things were left unresolved.

hmm. i struggle to rate this properly. this book started so strong and i was immediately really drawn into the world. the world-building is kind of insane considering it was written in the early 90s, and we do really live in a version of this universe now all the way down to the metaverse! part of this book is a great satire.

the book does have diverse representation and i love that we got a blasian protagonist… but some of the racism written by this white guy kinda had me like 🤨 but i was willing to overlook it since it was a part of the dystopian world and the book in general is dated in areas such as this. but just something to consider

i think the blend of the ancient with the cyberpunk was what lost some people but i really liked it. i was really drawn in by this point and was excited to see the culmination of esoteric religion and technology, but i feel like it didn’t fully reach a grand peak… it almost was amazing and then it was just like… nothing. this book was a lot of fantastic ideas that fell flat. was there too much going on? maybe it was just supposed to kind of be a regular person’a introduction to the genre and its ideologies? it also just felt so long and really dragged in the third quarter or so.

between this and the *SPOILERS* weirdly descriptive sex scene between an adult (NOT our epic protagonist) and a minor, i can’t rate this super high. BUT i did overall enjoy the story and had a really fun time.
