God I went into this book expecting to love it but it was just too frickin much, I get it it's a sci fi book but do you have to explain everything in the metaverse and the rollerskates to frickin Pizza boxes.

Sigh

The writing was idk not for me, the protagonist was annoying his backstory was annoying and that's all I'm gonna say .

Try it if you wanna, throw it if you wanna....

A lot of fascinating ideas which were lukewarm in execution. Downgraded one star for use of pejorative ableist language and racist terms which felt unnecessary. I liked The Diamond Age better overall.
medium-paced

Started at 3 stars- There were some very interesting elements but ended out underwhelming. I also found it somewhat lazy how the protagonist (whose last name is literally Protagonist) gained knowledge. It was not earned and absolutely not questioned. In a time where we do have Ai delivering answers to questions I wanted there to be less trust in the one source of truth. I wanted him to have to work at least a little to get the knowledge.

*Content warning! I had to drop my rating to 2.5 when a grown man has sex with a 15 year old girl. I don’t care how much you may argue ‘she wanted it’ - how much can you really want it, when if you pushed back it would absolutely not have stopped him. She could have in no way stopped him if she was against it. So in my opinion, her ‘wanting it’ was just as much a defense mechanism as actual desire. Just yuck. Very out dated.

That was odd

Parts of this book were fabulously awesome. Other parts, it got bogged down in rambles on history, philosophy, and religion. If you dig that sort of esoteric ramble, you'll love this book cover to cover. If you don't dig the rambles, you'll only love 90% of it. Either way, recommended.

Inventive, bizarre, and ultimately somewhat disappointing. 5 stars for the insightful, vivid libertarian dystopia setting and 2 stars for the plot, which reads like a cheap manga, particularly the ending. The first few chapters introducing futuristic LA are absolute gold though.

I loved certain aspects of this book. It has a lot going for it in world building, action, and complicated plot. BUT my first worry of overs**ualizaion of a 15 year old, became the reason I stopped. There’s a very graphic and plot central depiction of an adult and minor having s**. Say it’s consensual or whatever, I don’t care. The descriptions written about a 15 year old made me want to throw up. Book was cool before, but I’m not coming back to it after that.
